Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the vice-presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2024 elections, has called on Ghanaians to avoid framing elections along tribal lines.

Speaking to Umaru Sanda on Channel One TV, as monitored by MyNewsGH, he emphasized the dangers of promoting divisive narratives based on ethnic affiliations.

“Insulting tribes and people because you disagree with their voting patterns sets a dangerous precedent for this country,” he stated, warning against the repercussions of such rhetoric.

Addressing claims that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) voter base in the Volta Region is neglected, Dr. Prempeh urged citizens to focus on voter turnout rates and overall electoral performance rather than perpetuating ethnic biases.

“Let us not tribalize these issues. Statements suggesting the neglect of specific regions could lead us down a slippery slope,” he cautioned.

He further emphasized that Ghana’s elections reflect a broader national perspective, pointing out that no single tribe or region determines electoral outcomes.

Dr. Prempeh also dismissed allegations that his selection as the NPP running mate was intended to target votes from a particular ethnic group, describing such claims as baseless.

“My lineage may hold significance to some, but the party did not choose me based on tribal affiliations,” he clarified.

He called on citizens to engage in constructive discourse to strengthen Ghana’s democracy.
