The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) should be “quietly supportive of President Mahama leading the NDC into the 2020 election”, Managing Director of the State Transport Company (STC), Nana Akomea, has said.
Former President John Dramani Mahama has assured supporters of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) who want him to be flag bearer in order to lead the party in the 2020 general elections that he will not disappoint them.
According to Mr Mahama, he has considered the calls of the supporters who want him to make his intentions known concerning the upcoming primaries of the party.
Several political analysts have suggested that the comments imply Mr Mahama will contest the party’s primaries for the flagbearer slot in order to contest in the presidential polls in 2020.
Commenting on the development on Monday, 21 May 2018, Mr Akomea, a former Director of Communications of the NPP held the view that: “With any other candidate for the NDC, the election will be fought on President Akufo Addo's record as against the promises of that candidate”.
He indicated in his Facebook post that: “Against President Mahama however, the contest will be about President Akufo-Addo's four-year record against the four-year record of President Mahama, a record that earned him the historic 44.7% vote. I will look forward to that contest”.
Mr Akomea believes it will be to the advantage of the NPP if Mr Mahama leads the NDC into the polls.
