Let us learn to forgive – Kwabeba Agyepoong

Exactly thirty one (31) years ago today, three high court judges, one of whom was a lactating mother at the time, were abducted from their homes, under the cover of darkness and during curfew hours, taken to bundasi, shot and their bodies set ablaze. This was done, with an expressed purpose of burning the bodies into ashes to cover-up any trace of that heinous crime ever being unraveled. But by divine intervention, there was a heavy rainfall and the fire could not consume the victims’ remains and ultimately erasing the evidence. This unfortunate incident in our nation’s history has since been commemorated by Ghana Bar Association, annually, under the “Martyrs Day Lectures and Memorial Service”.

This year’s 31st Anniversary was successfully held; and laying a wreath at his father’s grave-side at the Osu cemetery after memorial service at the Osu Presby Church,Mr. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, the Press Secretary to former President Kufuor, whose father Mr. Kwadwo Agyei Agyepong, was one of the victims of that heinous crime, said; though his father and his colleagues paid the “ultimate sacrifice for protecting human rights of Ghanaians and preserve the course of justice, we can take a cue from the Biblical quotation of Romans 12:19 which says “vengeance is mine, sayeth the Lord”, and leave everything in the hands of the almighty God.

Mr. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong was of the conviction that, “it is rather important for us to move on as one people with no bitterness in our hearts since this is what can help us develop as a nation”.

Mr. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong further remarked that “let us all learn to forgive so that we can develop as a nation in harmony”. According to him, “vengeance is God’s although some of the perpetrators of the crime are still walking free”.
