Teachers and students of Anloga Senior High School (Anseco) and residents of the Atsugbor Electoral Area in the Anloga District of the Volta Region are in a state of shock and panic after lightning claimed the life of a teacher in the area.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, March 26, 2025, at about 17:45 hours during a heavy downpour characterized by thunderstorms.
James Fiati, the Assembly Member of the area, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, said the incident has left many residents traumatised, as the area had not experienced such a tragic event for a very long time.
“I received calls from some of my residents on Wednesday evening about a man in a raincoat lying motionless in the middle of the road while it was still raining, with no sign of anybody present with him. It was such a terrible situation,” Mr. Fiati said.
Fiati stated that it was believed the deceased teacher was heading home after school when the unfortunate incident occurred.
He cautioned residents to take necessary precautions during rainfall to ensure their safety.
Other information gathered indicated that the deceased had been identified as William Amoako, a Physics teacher in the Science Department of Anloga Senior High School.
“Many suspect that the tragic incident was caused by a lightning strike, but we have reported it to the Anloga Police, who conveyed the deceased’s body to the morgue of Keta Municipal Hospital for further examination and autopsy,” Fiati added.
He said that the police and school authorities had since visited the incident scene, and a preliminary examination of the body of the deceased revealed bruises on the head and torn clothing, which further suggested that lightning may have been involved.
Additional information gathered by the GNA revealed that the deceased, who was in his early 30s, was from Kwadaso in the Ashanti Region. The case has been reported to the Anloga Police, who have begun investigations into the incident.
The authorities of Anloga Senior High School are yet to comment on the incident. Meanwhile, the public has been encouraged to remain calm, assist the police in their investigations, and exercise caution during the rainy season, which is often accompanied by thunderstorms.
The incident has sent shockwaves across the community, with many residents struggling to come to terms with the sudden loss. Others are mourning, while students and teachers pay tribute to their fallen colleague.
