The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has called on the Inspector General of Police, George Akufo Dampare, to launch an investigation into claims by NPP parliamentary candidate Felicia Tettey that she paid GH¢50,000 to the police during the limited voter registration exercise in Sagnarigu.

The party said such allegations questioned the integrity of the police service, especially ahead of the December general elections, hence the need for the police hierarchy to investigate the authenticity of the claims and ensure any officer found guilty is dealt with.

In leaked audio, a voice sounding like Felicia Tettey alleged that she gave the police some Gh¢50,000 during the limited registration exercise.

She did not state exactly what the amount was made for; however, she was expressing her frustration at some of her constituency executives, whom she claimed were not handling party cash well.

She has not confirmed or denied the voice or the content of the leaked tape.

The NDC said it is unacceptable for a political party to be “paying the security service for lawfully performing their duties.”

Sagnarigu Constituency Communications Officer of the NDC, Abdulai Mohammed Amin who made the call at a news conference on Friday, questioned the reason behind the alleged payment.

“We are therefore calling on the IGP through the regional police command and the Sagnarigu municipal police command to open an immediate investigation into the matter,” he said.

"Again, we want to know at what location these funds were paid to the security service and for what reason they were paid,” he added.

Mr. Mohammed Amin said they are “tempted to believe that the police brutalities and their hostile relationship that characterized the registration exercise were sponsored by Felicia Tettey.”

He wondered if her claims of paying the police were limited to only her or involved all other NPP parliamentary candidates and asked, “If an NPP parliamentary candidate can pay GH¢ 50,000 to the security service, let us imagine what sitting Members of Parliament from the NPP would also have done.”
