Tema, Sept 04, GNA - Two teenagers, suspected to be thieves, on Sunday narrowly escaped lynching at Tema Community six through the intervention of Mr David Quaye Annang, the Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE).
The angry crowd, wielding clubs, stones and hammer pounced on Dennis Kabutey, 17 and Success Osei 18, who were pushing trucks loaded with scraps.
They suspected the boys of stealing the scraps from the neighbourhood and threatened to beat them to death. However, the boys were saved by Mr Annang, who advised the crowed to send them to the police for investigations and not to take the law into their hands.
According to a release signed by Inspector Olivia Turkson of the public Affairs Unit of the Tema Regional Police, the mob diverted their anger on the MCE, but he managed to save the situation and subsequently reported the matter to the police. Meanwhile, the MCE has urged residents of the metropolis to guard against mob attacks, since innocent people could fall victim, and create chaos, especially as the nation prepares for the December 2008 general elections. In the wake of such attacks, the Tema Regional Police Commander, DCOP John Kudalor has warned that any person or group of person who take part in mob attacks would be dealt with according to the full rigours of the law.
