MMT workers embark on strike

Accra, March 2, GNA - Workers of the Metro Mass Transit Company (MMT) on Monday began an indefinite strike to push for better working conditions. They are also criticising the Managing Director, Mr Henk Vessers, a Dutch, for inefficiency and demanding his replacement. Mr. Joseph Kwesi Ahenkora, Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the MMT Union, said the management had turned down their demands of an increase in their salaries and did not case about their welfare.

Mr. Ahenkora said allowances to be paid to intercity drivers had been frozen and workers had not benefited from a loan of GH¢ 350 cedis that was to be granted to drivers who applied for them. He said since they started the strike, no member of the management had spoken to them. Mr. Ahenkora appealed to Government to come to their aid since many of their buses, especially the intra city buses, were off the road. Efforts to get response from the management of the Metro Mass Transit Company proved futile.
