MOWAC condemns assault of alleged thief

Accra, April 1, GNA - The Ministry of Women and Children's Affairs on Friday lashed out at the students of University of Ghana who stripped naked a lady they accused of stealing a laptop and cell phones.

A statement issued in Accra by the Minister, Mrs Juliana Azumah-Mensah, said the Ministry had noted with 93great shock and concern" the 93disgraceful and unfortunate" incident where the lady wa= s "taunted, stripped naked and indecently assaulted". It said instead of handing over the lady to the security authorities, the students engaged in the degrading act which was a great affront to the rule of law and constituted gross human rights abuse.

"The Ministry wishes to strongly condemn this behaviour, especially coming from university students, who should know better and whom the country is looking up to as our future leaders.

"The Ministry calls on the University Authorities to as a matter of urgency, institute an investigation into the conduct of the students to ensure that all those found to have engaged in the act are brought to book." The statement said such behaviour on the university campuses should not be tolerated and the Ministry would follow up on the case to ensure that justice was served and such an unfortunate incident did not occur in the future. 1 April 11
