Tarkwa (W/R) May 12, GNA, Mrs. Gifty Eugenia Kusi, Member of Parliament (MP) for Tarkwa-Nsuaem Constituency has donated 17 packets of iron sheets valued at 57 million cedis (=A257m) to 37 rainstorm victims at a ceremony at Tarkwa on Wednesday.
The victims formed part of a number of people whose building roofs were ripped off during a severe rainstorm, which hit Tarkwa and its environs recently. Mrs. Kusi said the iron sheets were bought out of her share of the MP's Common fund.
She said, though she could not meet the needs of the victims," this would serve as a token of relief" and gave an assurance that she would continue to solicit funds to help others as well. Preceding the presentation, the MP inspected the areas that were severely affected by the rainstorm. They included Tarkwa Methodist JSS where the roof of a three-classroom block was ripped off, Christ Apostolic Church (CAC), Brenuakyinim and Tamso both suburbs of Tarkwa and Nsuta near Tarkwa.
At Methodst JSS, Mr Charles Warden, headteacher attributed the disaster to the contractor who did a shoddy work, adding, "the block was built barely five years ago".
He said it would have been a tragedy if school was in session because the roof was carried onto the lower classroom block. While at Brenuakyinim, Madam Dorcas Amoah, an usher of CAC, said a pillar of the church building collapsed on Francis Aboagye who is currently on admission at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital and another church member Helena Darkoaa was injured but has since been treated and discharged.
She said computers, church's musical instruments and other properties running into tens of millions cedis were destroyed.
