At the recently held maiden edition of the New England Ghana Festival, NEGfest 2024, Emmanuel Agyei Anhwere, Member of Parliament for Atwima-Nwabiagya South in Ashanti Region, made a passionate call for investors and tourists to explore the untapped tourism potential of Ghana. 

Describing the country as a hidden gem of West Africa, he highlighted Ghana's rich cultural heritage, breath-taking landscapes, and diverse wildlife as key reasons why Ghana should be the next destination for global tourism.

NEGfest, which was held in Worcester, Massachusetts, on Saturday, September 7th, saw a magnificent celebration of Ghanaian culture and heritage amidst glittering thriller performances.

In his address, Hon. Anhwere said, "Ghana is more than just a country; it is a journey into the heart of Africa. With a history that stretches back to the ancient kingdoms, a landscape teeming with natural beauty, and a vibrant culture like no other, Ghana is truly a tourism paradise waiting to be discovered."

This year’s festival was anchored by the theme "Sankofa: Embracing Our Heritage, Connecting Our Past," a powerful message underscoring the importance of cultural preservation and the connection between past and present.

NEGFest 2024, organised under the auspices of the Ghana Heritage Foundation (GHF), is in partnership with the US-Ghana Embassy, Worcester State University, Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce, the Ghana Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, the Ghana Tourism Authority, Akwaaba Clinic, Nananom, local churches, and the entire Ghana Community in New England.
and several other esteemed entities.

Some of the dignitaries present at the event included New Juaben Omanhene Daasebere Nana Kwaku Boateng III, the event guest of honor, Queen Mother of New Juaben Nana Juaben Serwaa III, Hon. Ken Asafo-Adjei, who doubles as the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Heritage Foundation and Consul Designate, Honorary Consulate of Ghana-Massachusetts, Co-Chair of the event Nana Awuah Panin III, MP for Tema West Hon. Carlos K. Ahenkorah, Hon. Alhaji Yusif Sulemana, MP for Bole-Bamboi, and Members of the Parliamentary Select Committee, among other high profile government officials and traditional leaders.

Natural Attractions: The Jewel of Ghana

Hon. Anhwere emphasized Ghana’s rich natural heritage, including its numerous national parks and reserves. 

Tourists can visit Kakum National Park, home to Africa’s famous canopy walkway, or the expansive Mole National Park, where visitors can experience close encounters with elephants and other wildlife. 

Dija National Park, another gem, offers stunning landscapes and opportunities for hiking and bird watching, making Ghana a top choice for eco-tourism enthusiasts.

A Vibrant Cultural Heritage

Ghana is home to more than 100 ethnic groups, each with its own unique customs, languages, and traditions. 

The MP highlighted the country's rich cultural landscape, encouraging visitors to explore traditional festivals such as Akwasidae, Homowo, and Hogbetsotso, which showcase the vibrancy of Ghanaian culture. 

Tourists can also visit iconic historical landmarks such as the Cape Coast Castle and Elmina Castle, both UNESCO World Heritage sites that hold deep historical significance, as well as the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park and Independence Square.

Hon. Anhwere encouraged tourists to engage with local communities, experience traditional Ghanaian hospitality, and immerse themselves in the country's arts and crafts. "A trip to Ghana is incomplete without witnessing the vibrant festivals, traditional drumming, and dance performances," he noted.

For the adventure seekers, Ghana offers thrilling outdoor activities, from surfing and water sports on its pristine beaches to hiking and safaris in its national parks. Community walkways and cultural immersion activities, such as drumming and dance lessons, provide an authentic and engaging experience for visitors.

The country’s infrastructure is also well developed, with international airports, domestic airlines, and a reliable road network ensuring convenient travel across the country.

NEGfest 2024, a landmark event, served as the perfect platform for Ghana to showcase its vast tourism potential to a global audience, with Hon. Emmanuel Agyei Anhwere leading the charge to position the country as a top tourist destination in Africa.

NEGfest is an annual festival aimed at fostering connections between the Ghanaian, African diaspora and their home continent through culture, business, and tourism. 

The 2024 edition is the first of its kind, attracting participants from around the globe.
