MP pushes for Ministry of men?s affairs

The NPP MP for Kade says it would soon be necessary to create a men?s ministry to protect the interest of men in Ghana.

Ofosu Asamoah says Ghanaian women seem to be over-empowered following recent drives by various government and non governmental organizations to fight for the interest of women.

He was contributing to a statement in parliament to congratulate the three female teachers who swept the top awards at the just 2005 Best Teachers Awards Ceremony.

Earlier the MPs said the grabbing of the topmost awards by the three female teachers is a clear indication that women can excel in their fields of work when given the right support.

The MPs were commenting on a statement made in parliament by the NPP MP for Builsa North, Agnes Chigabatia.

The MPs in their contributions said the three female teachers, Doris Naana Maafo of the Sunyani Secondary School, Peace Patience Abiti of Saint Francis Demonstration Junior Secondary School and Constance Amoah, of Larbikrom Presbyterian Primary demonstrate the believe held by some people that women hold the key to the nation?s development.

They called for more support for women to ensure that they excel in their respective fields of work.

But the MP for Kade, Ofosu Asamoah held a different view when he took the floor to contribute.

Mr. Asamoah congratulated the award winners but said in his view women are getting over empowered.

He told the House that looking at the current trend where women are grabbing all top positions, it would be necessary to create a men?s ministry to fight for the interest of men.

?I suggest to his Excellency that is creating a women?s ministry is over empowering the women then he has to create a men?s ministry to protect the interest of men?, he said.

Minority leader, Alban Bagbin however extolled the critical role women play in society when he was called to contribute.

He said women must be supported to aim higher and eventually hold one of the topmost offices in the country.

?I pray for the day when a woman would be among the top three positions in the country, that is the President or Vice President, a Speaker or Chief Justice?, he said. NPP
