Madina E P Church accident victims remembered

Accra, Feb. 15, GNA - A special remembrance service in honour of the 15th February, 2003 accident, which claimed the lives of 15 members of the church was held at the Evangelical Presbyterian Church Ghana, Trinity Parish-Madina, in Accra on Sunday.

The accident occurred at Akpafu-Todzi in the Hohoe District of the Volta Region when members were returning from the burial of a catechist of the church.

Delivering the sermon, The Reverend Frank Anku, Synod Clerk of the E. P. Church, Ghana called on the families of the victims to put their trust in the Lord because "it is he who lifts them through in times of pain."

He said their providence in the Lord would enable them withstand the agony that they were going through for loosing their love ones. Reverend James Afele, Chairman of the West Volta Presbytery of the E. P. Church disclosed that so far about 250 million cedis of the National Disaster Fund had been disbursed to the families of the victims.

He said the NDF was different from the Local Endowment fund that had been launched by the Madina EP Church for the bereaved families. Rev. Afele said part of the monies were used for the burial of the victims, some to the widows and orphans and the rest was spent on the victims who were still receiving treatment at the hospital.

He also appealed to NGO's and other institutions to contribute generously to the fund, adding that the widows, orphans and those still receiving treatment would still need assistance from the church. There were goodwill messages from, Mr. Kofi Attoh, Member of Parliament for Ho Central, a representative of the government and the Madina Local Council of Churches.

An appeal for funds in aid of the victims yielded 18 million cedis.
