The Vice President and Flagbearer of the NPP, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has said that the National Health Insurance Scheme has been revived and strengthened by the government, which inherited a collapsed scheme from former President Mahama.
The National Health Insurance Scheme was introduced by the NPP, under the government of John Agyekum Kufuor, but the scheme suffered payment issues after the NPP lost power, as the NDC promised a one time premium.
Addressing stakeholders of Suame Constituency in the Ashanti Region on Sunday, Dr. Bawumia said the NPP inherited a scheme that had been virtually collapsed by the Mahama regime, but the NPP has, revived it and made it even better.
"The National Health Insurance Scheme was virtually collapsed under Mahama but we have revived and strengthened it. We have put in so much money" Dr. Bawumia said, adding that management of other sicknesses with even more expensive drugs have been added to the scheme.
"Today, sicknesses that were not under the NHIS are today under the the NHIS. Childhood cancer, that is children with cancer is now free under he National Health Insuarancr Scheme."
"Sickle cell sufferers also have a drug they use called hydroxy urea. It is a very expensive drug but very potent for sickle cell sufferers. We have negotiated and we are giving these drugs to sickle cell sufferers free under the NHIS."
Dr. Bawumia also announced that after a successful six-month pilot of free kidney dialysis under the NHIS scheme for persons over 60 and under 18, dialysis will, from December 1, 2024, be free under the NHIS.
