A leading member of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has downplayed media reports about the purported secret meeting by Former President John Dramani Mahama on his intention to contest again for the presidency.
Lawyer George Loh said “former President Mahama can hold a meeting everywhere in the country even in space”. Media reports suggested that former President Mahama’s intention of contesting the presidency again on the ticket of the NDC in 2020 is gathering momentum, even though it is shrouded in secrecy.
Reports say the ex-president went to the Ashanti Region capital, Kumasi, in a private jet last Sunday to hold “secret” meetings with several top guns in the NDC about his intention of running for the presidency again.
The venue of the said meeting, reportedly held Sunday evening, remains a mystery as Mr. Mahama’s camp doesn’t want their potential opponents in the party to monitor their actions and strategies.
Lawyer Loh told TV3’s New Day hosted by Bright Nana Amfo on Tuesday, May 16 that if the meeting was indeed held as being reported, “it shows he [Mahama] is sensitive to the party and about the things that are happening in the party”.
He added that “the fact that we lost the election 2016 doesn’t make him a bad person to contest again. He can make decision for himself. It is his right to contest or not to contest again”.
The former North Dayi MP said “a lot of people are holding meetings in the party and I’m confidence that come 2020, NDC will make a formidable team”.
