The Northern regional chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party Daniel Bugri Naabu has said President John Mahama is leader of the country out of sheer luck and not competence.

According to him, Mr Mahama should be grateful for the death of the late President John Mills; an incident which provided him an automatic ascendency to the presidency.

Mahama who was Vice President of the late President was sworn-in as President following the death of the law lecturer in 2012. He has since gone ahead to win a national election.

He is reported to have told a gathering of NDC supporters in the Northern region as part of his campaign tour on Saturday that northerners must vote for him because he is one of them.

Commenting on the call by the President, the maverick NPP kingpin told Fiifi Banson on Accra-based Kasapa FM Monday that it will be disastrous for Mr. Mahama to count on northern votes in the 2016 elections.

“John is so lucky Atta Mills died and that is how he became the President. He shouldn’t forget that other northerners have also assumed that position before.

“Now he is the President, what has he done for northerners? Northerners have suffered under his government than any other government and they will continue to suffer. He hasn’t done anything for northerners apart from bringing shame to us,” he fumed.
