Professor Eric Nyarko-Sampson, a Senior Lecturer at the University of Cape Coast (UCC) has advised those advocating for a comeback of former President John Dramani Mahama in 2020, to first have him cleaned and cleared.
He observes that there is the need for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as a party to clear him and subsequently clean him before he could be accepted by Ghanaians as president if successful at the polls.
“He needs to be cleaned and cleared before he could become president. Cleaning in the sense that the party must vote and accept him as their flagbearer and then he will move with his contenders round to purge himself of various allegations leveled against him”, he said.
The Guidance and Counselling Lecturer cautioned the NDC against presenting him as an automatic candidate as this could be a recipe for disaster adding that there is the need for a contest where other persons who are eligible are allowed to run.
According to him, making the former president the sole and automatic candidate will not bring an end to the disaffection in the party and could further exacerbate the current divisions in the party which is likely to affect its electoral fortunes.
“They should not take him as an automatic candidate but pave way for others to contest him. When this is done and he wins, all members will agree and accept him as their candidate and during tours they will discount some of the allegations leveled against him”, he reiterated.
