Mahama must consult in selecting new EC boss – Agyepong

General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Kwabena Agyei Agyepong has made a strong call to the President of the Republic, John Dramani Mahama, to undertake widespread and thorough consultation before appointing a new Chairman of the Electoral Commission.

Mr Agyepong insisted that the Electoral Commission has suffered major setbacks arising from embarrassing revelations during the Election Petition at the Supreme Court and the recent ruling of the Supreme Court which culminated in the cancellation of the district level elections.

That occasioned colossal losses to the exchequer in the tune of over GH¢300 million, he observed.

He stressed that it was important for the Electoral Commission to win back the confidence of the Ghanaian people and to achieve this goal, the President should through his Council of State engage all major stakeholders in a constructive manner in order to appoint a new chairman for the EC who will inspire the revival of public confidence in the Commission

Dr Kwadwo Afari Gyan, the current chairman, is to proceed on statutory retirement in July, having served in his position for over two decades.

Mr Agyepong made this suggestion in a release on Thursday, March 12.
