Mahama must cut the hypocrisy on voters roll - LMVC

Pressure group, Let My Vote Count Alliance (LMVCA), has described President John Mahama’s position on their call for a new voters’ register as hypocritical.

According to the group, the President is hiding behind constitutional provisions to undermine their demand for the electoral list to be regenerated for the 2016 elections.

President Mahama in reaction to the persistent call by the main opposition New Patriotic Party and the LMVCA for a new register, told a gathering in France that the Electoral Commission must be left alone to decide what is best for the country with regards to the voters register.

"....We have an independent Electoral Commission and the Electoral Commissioners have security of office. I am not supposed to interfere in the work of the electoral commission. Ghana has an EC that is independent and does not consult the president to do anything,” Mr. Mahama stated.

Responding to the comment, a leading member of the LMVCA Ibrahim Adjei told Morning Starr host Nii Arday Clegg that the President is being dodgy on the matter.

“ I think many Ghanaians are disgusted with the about turn that the President has made on this matter.

“ …He should recall that he condemned the Police who attacked demonstrators who were on their way to submit a petition to the EC on this matter so he cannot say that we are presenting petitions but just demonstrating.

“He should cast his mind back to 2012, the EC had a clause that ‘no verification no vote’ but he gave and order that everybody should be allowed to vote after a few complaints. So when he talks about interfering, he should cast his mind back to 2012, we don’t want this hypocrisy and double face approach to the matter. He should stop the misinformation about the voters register,” Adjei fumed.
