The people of Kusaug in the Upper East Region are likely to get a region if former President John Mahama wins the upcoming general elections.

This is because the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has assured the people that their request for a region is feasible, and he is therefore ready to help the Chiefs and people of Kusaug achieve their aspirations.

John Mahama, in his speech at the palace of the Paramount King of Bawku as part of his ongoing campaign tour of the Upper East Region, gave reasons why creating the region for Bawku and its surrounding areas is not out of place.

For him, the Bawku enclave fully meets the criteria for a new region concerning population, viability, and land size, noting that the area is more densely populated and wider than the newly created North East Region.

He explained that creating a new area will bring development closer to the people and enhance security.

“I discussed something with him. Your Member of Parliament [Mahama Ayariga], I’m aware he has written a letter to the Speaker requesting that another region should be created out of the Upper East Region to cover the six constituencies in the Bawku area.

Bawku Naba raised it with me, and I told him in principle I think it’s a good idea for two reasons. One is for the reason of bringing government closer to the people. That’s the principal reason for which we create new regions and new districts. And then the second reason is for security. Bawku is a special security zone because of the issues that have been happening here,” he said.

Meanwhile, the revelation by John Mahama of the plan to create a region has been criticized by some persons.

Economist Dr. Raymond Ayilu argued that it would be a bad idea to break a small region like the Upper East Region into two.
