Major Restructuring for MDAs -JAK

Accra, Jan 31, GNA - A major restructuring of roles and responsibilities for streamlining the Presidency is being undertaken with the view to optimise the performance of all Ministries, Departments and Agencies of government on time-action principle, President John Agyekum Kufuor announced on Tuesday.

Delivering the State of the Nation's address in Parliament, the President said the restructuring was aimed to strengthen the Presidency and government to achieve the vigorous, purposeful and effective implementation of policies that government envisaged.

"With all due respect to the concept of separation of powers, I recommend that other autonomous organs of state adopt this principle of self-assessment to improve their performance," he said, and threw a challenge to the legislature and judiciary to join the crusade and initiate action towards the goal in their sectors.

President Kufuor said the government since assumption of power had made investment in people and created jobs, the cornerstone of its policies, which is to create a just, humane and prosperous society to enable individuals to contribute to the country's development.

In this direction, government had initiated a medium-to-long-term human resource development programme, which had started with the implementation of the educational reform policy, which emphasises vocational, technical and agricultural education and training.

President Kufuor said teacher education was central to the success of the education reform, adding that all the 38 teacher training institutions were being upgraded while 15 were being equipped to pay attention to maths and science, which had received inadequate support in the past.
