Renowned Pathologist, Professor Agyeman Badu Akosa, has urged Ghanaian to eat a lot vegetables as part of their meals since it the best way to avoid constipation.

He said it is unfortunate how most meals eaten by Ghanaians contain ninety-five percent carbohydrates, when ideally; the proportions must be one-third carbohydrates, vegetables, and proteins and fats, respectively.

He said our intestines contain bacteria that breakdown vegetables into soluble and insoluble portions, which softens our fecal matter and makes defecation easy.

‘Vegetables are important. The body will absorb the minerals and vitamins it needs, but the bulk of it stay with the feces; so if you don’t eat vegetables you constipate a lot” he stressed.

Prof. Akosa made these comments on the #StayAlive segment of HSTV’s Morning Show,#HealthyMorning, talking to Cecil Lee Longdon about the functions of the Gastrointestinal tract, its importance and how it can be maintained healthily.
