Makola Market Destroyed By Fire

Fire swept through stalls at Makola market in Accra destroying property worth billions of cedis. The fire, according to eyewitnesses started after 6.30 pm in the middle of TS, reputed to be the most popular used clothing market in Ghana. The market also houses tailors, dressmakers and designers of Joromi and embroidery. By 9pm, their goods, machines, tables, sheds and other effects have been consumed by the fire.

As the firemen hustled to completely quench the pockets of fire scattered around to prevent them from spreading, cabinets, rooms and other compartments stuffed with opened and unopened bales of second hand clothing, wax prints and other flammable materials were causing them more trouble.

Determined to succeed, the firemen with axe in hand and light beaming from huge security light of a police officer forced the cabinets open and ensured that the fire was put out. As it is with many of our markets and public places, accessing the fire was not easy. But the firemen succeeded in preventing the fire from spreading to the entire Makola market, the fuel depot within the Public Works Department (PWD) yard and a fuel service station near the market. The adjoining PWD building was however razed down.
