Malaria Awareness Week Observed At Cape Coast

Statistics from health institutions in the Central Region indicate that malaria accounts for about 40 percent of health cases reported. Besides, one out of every five deaths in children under five years is caused by the disease. The Regional Assistant Chief Technical Officer of the Diseases Control Unit of the Ministry of Health, Mr.. J.F. Quainoo, disclosed this at the regional Malaria Awareness Week at Cape Coast. He said the region had recorded 78 thousand 50 of the disease by the middle of this year. This, he said, would be doubled by the end of the year if steps are not taken to combat it. Mr.. Quainoo appealed to the public to organise regular clean-up exercises to help prevent the breeding of mosquitoes. He said this will control the disease and reduce the infant mortality rate in the region.
