Yaa Asantewaa's legacy as a formidable warrior who significantly contributed to the Ashanti Empire is celebrated worldwide. However, the Volta Region of Ghana also boasts a heroine of equal mettle—the Ewe warrior, Mama Yakagbe.

Mama Yakagbe, whose acts of valor left an indelible mark on Anlo history, fought valiantly for the Anlos. Togbi Sri II, the Spokesperson of the Awoemefia, recounts her participation alongside gallant male warriors in the Datsutagba war of 1866, where they faced the British army.

In a time of despair, Mama Yakagbe's bravery shone brightly. She feigned madness to infiltrate the enemy's camp, gathering crucial intelligence that turned the tide in favor of her people. Legends speak of her supernatural abilities, which not only shielded her comrades from the enemy's gaze but also enhanced the lethality of their weapons.

Her strategic genius is evident in the traps she laid within the enemy's camp, setting them ablaze and ensnaring the British soldiers as they attempted to flee.

Upon her triumphant return, Mama Yakagbe was honored with the creation of a 'chief’s Stool of Valour' named ‘Atorkor,’ now one of Anlo's most revered symbols of courage.

Mama Yakagbe's heroism earned her a place among legends like Yaa Asantewaa and other esteemed African women. Her name is uttered with pride alongside Ewe heroes such as Tsala and Tsali, the mythical twin brothers. Today, she stands as one of the three greatest legends in Anlo history, a beacon of pride and inspiration.
