Mammoth Crowd, Choked Streets: How Bawumia ‘shut down’ Yendi, other northern towns

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia was received by mammoth crowds

On the calendar, the day is Monday, July 15, 2024, and that is exactly 145 days to the general elections in Ghana on December 7, 2024.

Yet not even the fewness of the days to the crucial polls is confirmation of the start of official campaigning in the country, but that has not stopped crowds from pouring out every now and then to support their favourite candidates.

The unveiling of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh as the 2024 running mate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Kumasi presented a glimpse of such mammoth crowds, but Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s continuous campaigns to some parts of the north of Ghana added some more eyeballs to this.

Making stops at Yendi, Nanton and Karaga, the entourages of Dr. Bawumia received what can only be termed a massive outpouring of love from party supporters and sympathisers.

And like political rallies, the colours of the NPP have littered all these gatherings, even as owners of motorbikes flooded the principal streets and venues that the vice president visited during these tours.

Chanting loud praises for the NPP flagbearer, supporters could also be seen with several placards with inscriptions about the Bawumia and some of their local political leaders.

The sitting vice president of Ghana also paid courtesy calls on some traditional rulers, even as some of the political meetings he participated in went deep into the night.
