Man Slits Mother's Throat and ...

Richard Nartey slashed the throat of her mother, Madam Juliana Nartey, 54, a native of Obawale in the Yilo Krobo District of the Eastern Region killing her instantly on Farmers’ Day, December 1, 2006 without any provocation. The murderer, Richard, 36 years and unemployed fled into the bush after committing the dastardly act.

He was later arrested when the Obawale police led a search party into the bush to look for him.

Interestingly, Richard during his arrest, told the police not to waste their time because he had already drunk a poisonous substance to end his life.

And true to his words, he died minutes after he was brought to the Obawale Police Station for interrogation.

Inspector Thomas Attuah, Station Officer, told The Spectator that in the morning of December, 1, 2006, Richard Nartey picked a quarrel with his niece who was about seven-months pregnant.

He said that Madam Juliana who was the mother of Richard, advised him to stop quarrelling with the pregnant woman but her intervention did not go down well with him.

According to Inspector Attuah, Richard Nartey entered his room, brought out a cutlass, held the mouth of his mother and inflicted a deep cut at the back of her neck.

He said that Juliana Nartey fell and whilst on the ground, Richard stepped on her and slashed her throat. She died instantly.

Inspector Attuah said that sensing danger Richard gulped a substance suspected to be poison and fled into the bush but was later arrested by a search party.

The station officer said that during his arrest, the suspect told the police not to worry themselves because he had already taken in a poisonous substance to kill himself.

He said that the corpses had been deposited at the Koforidua Central Hospital for autopsy.

Investigations, however, revealed that Richard Nartey was once an alleged “wee” smoker.
