A young man who attempted to take advantage of Friday’s continuous voter registration exercise across the country to double-register has been arrested at Madina in Accra.

The man who appears to be in his twenties had showed up at the La-Nkwantanang Madina office of the Electoral Commission to register but when his fingerprints were captured, the biometric device detected he had already registered.

Officials at the office immediately alerted the police personnel who were present to arrest him, TV3’s Selorm Amenya reported, adding he was then handcuffed and taken to the Madina Police Station.

The Electoral Commission on August 19 and 26 gave Ghanaians who are eligible to vote but have not yet registered, another opportunity to get their names on the country’s electoral roll. Such persons were directed to visit any of the Commission’s district offices closer to them to register.

Selorm reported that more than 200 people thronged the EC’s office at La-Nkwantanang Madina Friday morning to register to vote but complained of the slow pace of the process causing delays.

“They lament the process is slow as those who got to the EC’s office before 6:00am are yet to complete the process,” our correspondent reported at 12:30pm.

According to him, several announcements were made asking those who are not first time registrants to leave the queue but the young man whose name is not yet given, remained defiant but when it got to his turn it was detected he had registered already.
