Man commits suicide

Hohoe, Sept 23, GNA - A Togolese man, Kofi Azialekor, 56, alias Gakpo, reportedly committed suicide on September 13, on suspicion that his wife was cheating on him.

The deceased, a commercial driver and father of ten, started behaving strangely prior to taking his life by hanging. Ms Dzifa Asare, daughter-in-law of the deceased, who witnessed the heinous crime, told the Ghana News Agency that, the deceased arrived home after work around 1730 hours, alleging that he had information that his wife travelled with her lover and threatened to kill himself. Ms Asare, the only person at their Mama Ame cottage near Kpeme, a suburb of Hohoe said she asked him to treat the issue as a gossip, which could not be true.

She narrated that strangely, deceased wielding a pestle ordered her to show him where they kept the weedicide, but in an attempt to get the chemical she further hid it beyond sight.

Ms Asare said the deceased as if possessed reached out to their nylon drying line, loosed it and formed a noose around his neck and dashed to the backyard, where there was a giant mango tree. She said the deceased quickly climbed up the tree and in a jiffy tied the loose ends of the rope to a branch and dropped himself. Ms Asare, sobbing uncontrollably said at this point the deceased's daughter appeared but there was nothing both of them could do until he gave up.

Police Chief Inspector Kofi Appiah-Ntori, in-charge of Bla Police Station in Hohoe, corroborated the incident saying Mr Edmund Batse, Assemblyman for that area reported the case.

He said the Police was investigating the case. Ms Mary Zigah, wife of the deceased, debunked rumours of acts of infidelity and threats of divorce as was being peddled. She said she over-stayed her trip because she had to attend the funeral of a relative after the burial of her aunt. 23 Sept. 09
