Man jailed five years for stealing bibles.

Juaso (Ash), April 18, GNA -- The Juaso circuit court has sentenced a security man with the World Vision International (WVI) to five years imprisonment for stealing a quantity of Holy Bibles that were entrusted to his care at Pataban near Agogo in Ashanti Akim. Akwasi Miller aged 29 years pleaded guilty to charges of unlawful entry and stealing.

Chief Inspector Haruna Salifu told the court, presided over by Mr Jacob Boon that on March 21, 2004, at 10 p.m. the accused and one other at large hired a taxi to Patahan village and loaded nine boxes of Bibles containing 216 pieces, took them to Agogo.

He said the following day he charted another taxi in the morning, took the Bibles to Kumasi and allegedly sold them for two million cedis, unfortunately information reached the head of WVI that the bibles had been sold out.

Miller, whom police described as a man with questionable character, was arrested and he confessed committing the crime and had spent part of the money leaving the balance of 680,000 cedis.

Chief Inspector Salifu said the accused led the police to his room and brought out the remaining Bibles. He also sent police to Kumasi to trace the buyer but could not find him.

The court ordered that the retrieved 680,000 cedis should be handed over to the head of WVI.
