Independent Parliamentary Candidate for Gomoa Central, Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A Plus, has made some allegations about the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

In an interview on Hitz FM on August 12, 2024, A Plus claimed that most NPP members are primarily individuals who opposed former President Jerry John Rawlings, rather than those who align with the party’s ideology.

A Plus argued that Rawlings aimed to clean up the system, but many perceived him as an antagonist.

He noted that Rawlings supported some churches while opposing exploitative practices in others.

A Plus alleged that some pastors in Kumasi were involved in costly funeral practices, which Rawlings opposed, leading to their opposition.

“Rawlings supported Action Chapel; he supported Archbishop Agyinasare’s church; he supported them and ensured that he got rid of this; go and bring your underwear and let’s burn it churches,” he said.

This, according to him, led to many pastors being NPP supporters, not because they understood the party's ideology, but because they disliked Rawlings.

“So all these pastors, the majority of them, are NPP, and it is not because they understand the ideology; no, they just don’t like Rawlings,” he said.

A Plus also claimed that many NPP members’ parents were involved in corrupt activities, resulting in their arrest or punishment by Rawlings.

Reflecting on Rawlings' legacy, A Plus expressed admiration for Rawlings, describing him as a strong Nkrumahist and likening his charisma to that of Kwame Nkrumah.

He, however, lamented that Rawlings eventually gave up on his goal.

“Rawlings is part of the problem that we are facing now because he gave up. Rawlings was the only person who could tell everybody in Ghana to sleep, and everybody will sleep, so he had the opportunity to do a lot, but at a point he was tired,” he said.
