Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has attributed Ghana’s slow pace of development to failed leadership over the years.

According to him, a country like Ghana with lots of mineral resources should have been many times developed than it is now, adding that most of the country’s leaders across sectors are performing poorly as they were forced into those positions.

“God has blessed our continent and a country like Ghana with such mineral resources and I’ve found over the years that perhaps the bane of our development is not so good leadership. I don’t so much blame the leaders because many of them were forced into leadership positions, they were not prepared.

This is why across the continent development has been stalled, you cannot be in leadership in any sector without being prepared in terms of knowledge, experience and exposure. You must know the field, we live in times where we say that the entire world is just one market.”

Ex-President Kufuor was speaking at the launch of an Endowment Fund for the John Agyekum Kufuor Foundation in Accra.

The event had lots of high ups including Ministers of State, Traditional Leaders, Governor of the Central Bank and captains of industry in attendance. Over GHC1 million was raised to support a GHC80 million target to complete the John Agyekum Kufuor Centre for Leadership and Governance at the University of Ghana.
