Maths Professor offers forum for mathematics teachers

Accra, Nov. 18, GNA - A Mathematics Professor is providing a forum for teachers of the subject to discuss issues involving the improvement of mathematics education in the country.

Professor S.E. Anku, who is Managing Director of MEAGASA Education, a privately-owned consultancy service provider in mathematics, said 50 mathematics teachers from each region would be provided free e-mail accounts to initiate the discussions.

In a statement, he asked mathematics teachers to provide their full name, school and region to either infor@mathned.org or the Managing Director, Meagasa Education, Box NG 456, Nungua. Prof. Anku, who is a Mathematics Professor at Ashesi University in Accra, said Meagasa Education had embarked on a mission to motivate Ghanaians to appreciate the importance and relevance of the subject in today's world.

"It is our belief that the principles and methods of mathematics need to be at the forefront of Ghana's development efforts. "However, the sad news is that our students are performing poorly in Mathematics as evidenced by results of in international study in Mathematics in which Ghana participated. "Out of the 45 participating countries that were ranked from the highest to lowest in performance, Ghana occupied the 44th position." Prof. Anku said as soon as they received the information, they would create e-mail accounts for each of the teachers.
