Media freedom under no attack - Oppong Nkrumah

The Minister for Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to creating a media-friendly and safe environment for journalists to freely practice their profession without fear of harm.

According to him, ensuring free and responsible journalism is a collective duty and has to this end urged all stakeholders to play an active role in this commitment.

“We need to have an environment where journalists can operate freely and trust that even when they make mistakes they will not be subjected to physical harm”, Mr. Nkrumah told Kwame Tutu exclusively on Anopa Nkomo on Accra based Kingdom FM 107.7.

He explained that such an environment must be one in which “we can validate claims of attacks and also ensure protection for journalists as well as proffer punishment for offences”, adding that situations, where Journalists are subjected to physical harms, need quick condemnation.

The Ofoase – Ayirebi Legislator reiterated that a safe and conducive environment exists for the practice of responsible journalism in Ghana and that media freedom in Ghana is not under attack as being peddled in publication.

‘Indeed, there have been few reports of unwarranted attacks on Journalists of which we have condemned but it does not equate that media protection has broken down’, he emphasized.

He expressed the government’s commitment to supporting measures that deepen the frontiers of free expression in the advancement of the country’s democracy.
