Media sanctions: Government frustrating demo efforts - AFRC

The planned demonstration by the Alliance for Responsible Citizens (AFRC) has been postponed after the Ghana Police Service (GPS) failed to approve the route for the protest.

AFRC had planned to demonstrate against the National Media Commission (NMC) over sanctions imposed on some 131 radio stations across the country, but the police asked for some last minute changes to the route after earlier granting the approval.

The police is also citing insufficient personnel to cover the proposed route.

However, Director of Communication of AFRC, Eric Adjei, who issued a press release on Wednesday, October 25 said the move by the law enforcement agency is informed by government’s intentions to frustrate their efforts.

“We see this as a subtle attempt by this intolerant Akufo-Addo administration to frustrate and thwart our efforts at organising this demonstration.

“We call on all our members and supporters to remain calm. We would like to assure you that no amount of intimidation will stop us from exercising our constitutional right in embarking on this demonstration on Monday, the 6th of November, 2017,” the statement said.
