The Ghana Bar Association has made history by electing two females to top executive positions. The move marks a pivotal milestone in Ghana’s legal profession.
Efua Ghartey, an accomplished lawyer at the Bar and wife of Joe Ghartey, Member of Parliament for Essikado-Ketan, with close to thirty years’ experience at the Bar, secured 1,208 votes, defeating her opponent, Kwadzo Dzakpasu, who garnered 1,060 votes.
She will succeed Yaw Acheampong Boafo, who has served as the GBA president from September 2021 till date.
Victoria Barth, another highly accomplished legal professional, has been elected as National Vice President of the GBA.
She is known for her stellar academic career at the Ghana School of Law, where she has mentored many young lawyers and was a key part of the legal team that represented President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo during the 2021 election petition.
The rest of the newly elected executives are Baffour Gyau, who has been elected as Secretary; Aurelius Awuku, Assistant Secretary; Saviour Kudze, Public Relation's Officer; and Lawrencia Adika, Assistant Public Relations Officer.
Meanwhile, a private legal practitioner, Gabby Otchere Darko, has congratulated the newly-elected executives who will be leading the Ghana Bar Association.
In a post shared on his X page on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, he stated, "Well done to the two amazing lawyers who are now leading the Ghana Bar Association, Efua Ghartey and Victoria Barth! Historic! Congratulations extended to the entire new team, Baffour Gyau, Aurelius Awuku, Saviour Kudze and Lawrencia Adika.”
