Fire Officers at Agona Swedru National Fire Service (NFS) have stated that preliminary investigations into Saturday’s fire incident at the Agona Swedru branch of the Melcom shopping centre revealed that an electrical fault caused the fire.
The Agona Swedru branch of Melcom Shopping Centre last Saturday was gutted by fire with goods worth millions of Ghana Cedis which took combined efforts of the Kasoa, Winneba and Swedru Fire stations to bring it under control.
According to the Swedru Municipal Divisional Fire Officer Grade 1, Ebenezer Mensah, investigations have commenced into the disaster to establish the evidence of the electrical fault.
Speaking on Citi Fm on Monday, Mr. Mensah stated that the Manager of the Shopping Center has been call upon to assist with the investigations.
“We are suspecting that there are some electrical gadgets that were left on in the room because when you watch the whole apartment, on one side of the wall, the beams and the pillars have cracked seriously and every item was burnt” he noted.
He however added that an interview conducted with one of the workers so far exposed that the fire certificate for the shop had expired.
“it’s supposed to last for 12 months then you just come to renew it and then we will go there again to inspect if all gadgets are still intact…so they also have some answers to give but for now I can’t give you the exact cause” he intimated.
