Sekondi, Jan. 30, GNA - Members of Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) are to undertake massive clean-up exercise in the metropolis on February 14 this year, in response to President John Evans Atta Mills' call for environmental cleanliness. Mr Glory Agordzo, Principal Environmental Health Technologist of the assembly, announced this at a press briefing at Sekondi on Friday. He said the exercise would begin at 0700 and end at 1200 and no commercial activity would be permitted during the period.
Mr Agordzo said the exercise was dubbed "Chocolate Clean-up Day" because it would coincide with this year's Valentine Day. He said the exercise had been scheduled for Valentine Day to sensitize the public about their role in environmental sanitation, to observe the assembly's bye-laws and not to put the entire burden on its shoulders. Mr Agordzi said people should show their love for each other and come out in their numbers to participate in the exercise. He said members of Ghana Armed Forces, security services, organized youth groups and political parties would participate in the exercise at Takoradi Market Circle, Western Regional Youth Centre, Sekondi and Kojokrom to desilt drains, sweep and weed bushy areas,
Mr John Laste, Public Relations Officer of the assembly, said a committee had been formed to organize and supervise the exercise and tools and equipment were being mobilised for the exercise that would be sustained by rotational monthly general clean-up exercises in sub-metropolitan areas. He advised the public to refrain from indiscriminate littering of the environment.
