Methodist Churches in Toronto move towards unity

In a bold move to reverse the disturbing trend of Church divisions and multiplications in the Ghanaian-Canadian communities, the leadership of the Methodist Church have taken some positive action to re-unite the various factions of the Church starting with the factions in Toronto, Canada’s largest city.

Throughout the weekend of December 7 to 8 the leadership of the Ghana Methodist Church of Toronto and the Ghana Calvary Methodist United Church of Toronto met behind closed doors in marathon negotiating sessions. These were under the spiritual guidance and supervision of the Presiding Bishop of the Ghana Methodist Conference, The Most Reverend Dr. Aboagye-Mensah and the Lay President of the Ghana Methodist Conference in Ghana, Mr Ato Essuman who is also the Chief Director of the Ministry of Youth & Sports. The pair flew in from Ghana especially for this very important meeting of spiritual minds.

A historic Memorandum of Understanding was signed at the end of the negotiations at the Calvary Methodist Church at 11 Cross St., Church & Weston Road on Sunday December 7 2003 to signify the intentions of the two church factions to work towards uniting their congregations in the very near future. The document was signed by three persons from each congregation including their Society Stewards and witnessed with the signatures of Rev. Samuel Omane Agyapong of the Ghana Methodist Church and Rev. Emmanuel Ofori of the Calvary Methodist United Church.

A working committee of eight comprising the two Ministers , the two Society Stewards and two other representatives each will be meeting to begin the positive moves towards reconciliation and eventual unity. The committee is expected to submit its report by February 2004.
