Mining Company institutes scholarship scheme

Iduapriem (W/R), Oct. 5, GNA - Iduapriem Mine, a subsidiary of Ashanti Goldfields Company (AGC), has instituted a scholarship scheme and Managing Director's (MD's) Best Junior Secondary School (JSS) student award to support education in its mine lease areas. Iduapriem Mine's policy to introduce the scholarship and best JSS students' award is part of its corporate strategy to focus on community assistance predominantly in education, sanitation and water quality improvement. These were contained in a release signed by Mr. David Kwesi Renner, Managing Director of the company.

It said the scheme was meant to encourage potential students to give of their best and study hard and also to assist needy but brilliant students in its catchment areas of operation. The release said the scholarship is offered to community members who have gained admission to senior secondary school, adding, additional that support from Iduapriem Mine to students is the provision of free transport for day students living in the neighbouring communities to and from Tarkwa. According to the release, MD's Best JSS Student Award would be enjoyed by the best students from the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) in each of the two junior secondary schools in the neighbouring communities.

It said the vision of the mine is to support the neighbouring communities and the government's effort of making quality education available to children of school going-age in the country. "Education is the only means by which the potential of the children can be realised, thereby making them marketable in the future. "It is hoped that beneficiaries of the award and the scholarship would one day come out as distinguished scholars and future leaders of the country," it added.
