Minister 'begs' Universities to admit more students

Minister for Education, Jane Naana Opoku Agyeman, has pleaded with universities across the country to go a mile further in admitting qualified SHS graduates in the 2013/2014 academic year.

Speaking at the University of Ghana’s congregation, Professor Opoku Agyeman said the educational system is fraught with challenges but pleaded with Universities authorities to bear with the situation until proper measure are put in place.

She added that the country had been beset with such a challenge of admitting two batches of SHS graduates before and that the country is even better positioned now with the onset of private universities.

“This is an unusual year that we have two groups writing the exams and seeking admission.

“Even if you study the statistics you would notice that in Ghana we barely admit all the students who qualify,” Professor Opoku Agyeman said.

“It is an unusual challenge and, therefore, we are humbly requesting unusual responses,” she said.
