Minister calls for immediate transfer of Engineer

Accra, June 22, GNA - Alhaji Mustapha Ali Idris, Minister of Works and Housing, on Tuesday ordered the immediate transfer of Mr Emmanuel Ofosu, an Engineer at the Teshie Water Project Site, to the Head Office of Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) for unsatisfactory work.

Alhaji Ali Idris said he was not satisfied with the pace of work at the site and asked that the Engineer be replaced with a more efficient person. This was after he had taken his time to listen to the explanation for the delay.

He further said the new Engineer together with the Managing Director of GWCL should report daily to the Sector Minister about the progress of work at the site.

Alhaji Ali Idris gave the order when he inspected work on the ongoing Project of the GWCL at Teshie in Accra.

The Project was scheduled for completion and inauguration in the first week of July 2004 but the Minister was told that only 80 per cent of work had been completed at the time of his tour.

The Project being undertaken at a cost of about 3.40 billion cedis is to improve the water supply system in Teshie. It involves the building a booster station to pump 378,540 litres of water into an overhead tank and the construction of an underground tank to store 946,350 litres.

Work on the project started about two-and-a-half months ago. Alhaji Ali Idris thanked the people of Teshie for the tolerance they had shown since the Project started till this time.

He said Teshie like all other communities in the country deserved to have good drinking water, adding: This is what our Government is determined to do to ensure that the acute water problem in the area is solved."

The Minister said President John Agyekum Kufuor had tasked him together with the Regional Minister and the Member of Parliament for the area and the Mayor of Accra to make sure that the Project came to its logical conclusion.

He was accompanied on the tour by Sheikh Ibrahim Cudjoe Quaye, Greater Accra Regional Minister, Mr Eddy Akita, Minister of State in-Charge of Fisheries and Member of Parliament for the area and Stanley Nii Adjiri Blankson, Mayor of Accra.

Mr Solomon G. Lamptey, Managing Director of GWCL said the main target of the project was to solve the water problem facing Teshie. 22 June 04
