Minister presents 22 laptops to students in Sunyani

The Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology on Tuesday presented 22 laptop computers to some students at a short ceremony in Sunyani.

The presentation followed request made to the ministry by the beneficiaries drawn from tertiary and second cycle institutions in the Brong-Ahafo Region.

They are from the Catholic University College of Ghana, Sunyani Polytechnic, as well as Sunyani Senior High, Twene Amanfo Senior High and Odumaseman Senior High Schools.

Making the presentation, Ms. Sherry Ayittey, Minister of Environment, Science and Technology, said one of the legacies the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government could bequeath the younger generation was to make them advanced in the study of Information and Communication Technology (ICT).

She said it was against this background that the government had introduced the “ICT laptop project” under the better Ghana agenda.

Under this project, Ms. Ayittey explained, her ministry in collaboration with the RLG Communication Company was giving out a number of laptops free of charge to students countrywide.

Aside distribution of the computers, RLG is also providing some of the youth with training in mobile phone and laptop assembling, she said.

Mr. Kwadwo Nyamekye-Marfo, Brong-Ahafo Regional Minister, said 850 youth had so far been trained in the region under the ICT module of the National Youth Employment Programme (NYEP).

He appealed to the unemployed youth in the region to register with the NYEP to acquire skill training.**
