Chairman of the National Development Planning Commission, Professor Stephen Adei has criticized President Akufo-Addo’s administration for resourcing the Ministry of Information so as to promote its propaganda.
He quizzes why a small institution like the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) is being denied adequate funds for its smooth operation but the Ministry of Information which is relatively a larger entity is receiving enough funds to promote information from the government.
For him, this is a strong indication of a deliberate attempt by government to sabotage the NCCE.
“I think that it is a deliberate attempt to make sure that the NCCE does not work. The government of today, if anything at all they will like to give the money to the Ministry of Information because it is their propaganda machinery”, he said.
Speaking at the national dialogue on Public Accountability: Abuse of Office, Prof Adei noted that the allocation of some two million Ghana cedis annually to the NCCE for operations amounts to an abuse of power. He believes it will require a lot more than the stated amount to educate the public on its civil rights.
Prof Adei noted that there is endemic corruption in the country to eradicate it, government must examine our laws.
“We must move away from talking about the perception of corruption and accept that there is endemic corruption and that we should focus our attention on what to do about them… I believe that we must look at our laws and make it easier for those who are corrupt to be found out and punished.”
