Accra, Aug. 8, GNA - President John Agyekum Kufuor on Monday appealed to the Ministry of Education and Sports to decentralise the award of scholarships offered to the Ministry to the regions for more teachers to have the opportunity to benefit. He made the appeal when Mr Francisco Cazal, President of American Field Service (AFS) International, led a delegation from the organisation to pay a courtesy call on him at the Castle, Osu. President Kufuor commended the AFS for offering about 15 to 25 scholarships to the Ministry next year and appealed to the Ministry to ensure that the offer was decentralised for more teachers and the youth to benefit.
He said many Ghanaians had benefited from the AFS in the past and appealed to the organisation to increase the scholarship offered to the Ministry in the future.
President Kufuor said with globalisation it would be ideal for more people to interact to learn from each other to boost socio-economic development.
He said the new educational reforms launched by the Government would form the cornerstone in its top priority policy of human resource development.
Mr Cazal said since 1967 many Ghanaians had benefited from AFS scholarships and expressed optimism that the number would increase in the future.
AFS is one of the largest community-based volunteer organisations in the world that provides inter-cultural learning opportunities to help people develop the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to create a more just and peaceful world. Since 1947 more than 325,000 individuals from more than 50 countries have benefited. 08 Aug. 05
