Misunderstanding deprives Mankranso of biogas toilet facility

Mankranso (Ash), June 28, GNA- A misunderstanding between the Ahafo-Ano South District Assembly and the Water and Sanitation Management Committee has deprived the people of Mankranso from benefiting from a biogas toilet facility, which has been provided by the assembly.

The facility, apart from its use as a public place of convenience was also to produce biogas for sale, but the insistence of the Water and Sanitation Management Committee to operate it has stalled the project, which only needed a compressing machine to start full operations. Mr Kwaku Obeng Boateng, District Chief Executive, disclosed this at a three-day workshop for assembly members at Mankranso in an answer to a question raised by Mr Matthew Borgor, assemblyman for the area as to why the project had become a 'white elephant' despite its inauguration some two years ago.

The DCE further alleged that the controversy over which of the two bodies should provide the compressing machine has left the project in the bush at the mercy of the weather and the inhabitants who have decided to use its bushy surroundings as a place of convenience since they have been deprived of its use.

When contacted, Mr Kwaku Addai, Chairman of the Community Water and Sanitation Committee admitted the allegation but attributed the committee's inability to provide the compressor to the loss of some water facilities to the tune of 26 million cedis allegedly stolen by unidentified thieves.

He said the situation has rendered the committee cash-strapped but promised to purchase the compressor as soon as possible.
