Accra, May 18, GNA - Three men were on Thursday lynched by a mob at De Hay Hotel at Mamprobi in Accra when they attempted to go on a goatstealing spree in broad daylight.
Police named them as Agenda, 38, K. O., 25, and Kwadwo Owusu, 28. Two of their accomplices, however, escaped.
Briefing journalists in Accra, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Douglas Akrofi Asiedu, Greater Accra Regional Police Commander, said between noon and 1300 hours the Police had information that three men had been lynched at spot near De Hay Hotel Mamprobi when they attempted to steal goats.
ACP Asiedu said the robbers numbering about five were believed to have snatched an Opel Corsa taxicab with registration number GW 2473 V to embark on the stealing spree.
He said some people saw the robbers were sprinkling corn on the ground to bait goats and raised the alarm.
He said robbers got into the taxicab and tried to speed off but the taxicab broke down abruptly. Two of them managed to escape but the others were apprehended by a mob, which lynched them.
ACP Asiedu said the Police went to the scene and picked up the bodies, the taxicab, a bag containing corn, a purse, a shirt and a pair of sandals.
He said Agenda, who was among the robbers, had been on the Police wanted list. "He and one Jango were believed to have snatched a car at gunpoint a month ago."
He commended residents for the vigilance they had displayed but condemned the instant justice meted out on the robbers saying "we sometimes need them to assist to investigate some robbery cases levelled against them". ACP Asiedu said the Police would not relent in their efforts to apprehend those, who had escaped.
