Ho, June, 11, GNA - Mobil Ghana Limited, on Friday presented 100 pieces of collapsible canes, worth 5 million cedis to the Volta Regional branch of the Ghana Association of the Blind (GAB).
Presenting the items, Mr Kwame Nyame-Essifie, Human Resource Manager of the company said the gesture was to bring some hope to the visually impaired by making their movement easy and to boost their self confidence. He said it was unfortunate that society considered the blind as underprivileged, yet paid little attention to their welfare, thus making them feel more unwanted. He expressed the hope that the gift would "cement" the relationship between the two for society's benefit.
Mr Eric Ofori, Volta Regional Coordinator of GAB, said one of the major problems confronting members of the association had been the scarcity of the collapsible canes apart from pressing problems like unemployment, health, education and human rights. He therefore, expressed appreciation of the effort of Mobil Ghana Limited saying that their gesture was a "shinning example of their interest in the welfare of the disabled".
Mr Ofori assured that the gift would not find itself in the market as used to be the case in some places but would be distributed among members to help them avoid obstacles that may hinder their free movements. Mr Ofori also called on other benevolent organizations and financial institutions to come to the aid of skilled and hardworking members, who needed micro-credit to enhance their economic liberation for socio-economic development.
