Mobile phone gives away robber

The police in Kumasi has arrested a man for allegedly robbing a trader of her mobile phone at gun-point at Kwadaso-Ohwimase in Kumasi on July 19.

Augustine Owusu had used his image as a screen saver on his phone and it was this that gave him away, when he accidentally dropped it in his haste to escape.

The suspect had attacked Madam Susanna Owusu on her way home from work, seized her Samsung phone and attempted to drag her to an obscure place to rape her.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Kwaku Ampofo-Duku, Deputy Ashanti Regional Commander, told a media briefing that the woman fiercely resisted, amid shouts for help and that attracted some people nearby who rushed to her aid.

Sensing danger, the suspect dashed into the nearby bush, but as luck would have it, his phone slipped from his pocket and provided the vital lead for his arrest.

It was used to track him down to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), where he had been admitted with gunshot wounds.

ACP Ampofo-Duku said Owusu had already confessed to the robbery and claimed the stolen phone was later seized alongside his locally-manufactured pistol by another robbery gang.

He alleged that it was during a struggle with members of the gang that he was shot on the shoulder, resulting in his admission at KATH’s Emergency Centre.
