Mother of rape victim granted bail

Accra, July 4, GNA - An Accra circuit court on Monday granted bail to a trader whose

16-year-old daughter reported that she was raped by her own father. The court presided over by Mrs Georgina Mensah Datsa granted Margaret Amoako

bail in the sum of GH¢10,000 to reappear on July 11 for the trial to comm= ence. Amoako was said to have aided and abetted her husband in the rape of their daughter.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Sarah Acquah told the court that the victim,

who is a student in a second cycle institution, on May 18, made a complaint to the

Domestic Violence and Victim Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service Accra about

an alleged rape by her biological father, George Koffie. The prosecutor said when the victim called her mother to report what her father had

done, she asked her to come home to Burma Camp in Accra. When the victim arrived, her mother bought some drugs for her and told her not to

disclose the ordeal to anyone as it would be a disgrace to the entire famil= y. ASP Acquah said when the victim insisted on reporting the incest to the police the

suspect locked her up in a room and beat her up to put fear into her. When the victim finally reported the case to the Police, the suspect and some other

people went to her school to force her to come and deny what she had already told the

police.

ASP Acquah said Amoako further went to see a witness in the case whom she begged

to come and deceive the police that he was the person who rather had sex with the victim

and not her father. The witness refused and reported the incident to the police.
