Motorcycle mechanic sentenced for robbery

A motorcycle mechanic, Awudu Ibrahim was on Tuesday sentenced to 10 years imprisonment by an Accra Circuit Court presided over by Mr Francis Obiri for robbery.

Awudu was sentenced on the charge of robbing one Richard Aryee and his family of an iPhone worth GH? 2,100.00 a Nokia mobile phone valued at GH? 500.00 and an amount of GH? 2, 000.00.

He pleaded not guilty to the charge but was found guilty by the Court after full trial and was sentenced accordingly.

Prosecuting Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Patrick Morkeh told the Court that the complainant is an Estate Developer.

He said on March 7 at about 0230 hours when the complainant and the family were asleep, Awudu in the company of two others now at large armed with a locally manufactured pistol, a car jack and a screw driver broke into their room, attacked him and the wife, and robbed them of the listed items.

The prosecution said the complainant screamed for help which attracted neighbours who came out with their guns when the robbers were escaping through the kitchen window.

DSP Morkeh said the neighbours fired into the direction of the robbers and the convict was shot in the process whilst the other two escaped with the booty.

He told the Court that Awudu was arrested and handed over to the police, but was rushed to the Police Hospital for admission since he sustained serious injuries on his buttocks.

In his statement to the police, Awudu claimed to have gone to the house of the complainant to steal a cylinder.
